The Bible is an ancient book written by men and heavily edited by other men. It is not the word of God and it is not the word of Jesus as the new testament was written well after he was dead by people who never met him. The bible needs to be interpreted in order to get anything out of it. Ancient texts do not stand on their own, they rely on traditions of interpretation. There is a long history of sophisticated ways of interpreting the bible. Most of these involve interpreting passages in an analogical way and meditating on them to gain insight. Used in this way, the bible is an integral part of a deep wisdom tradition. The bible is not a historical document, but historical scholarship is important to frame the readings to understand what was actually meant.
